Part Three: The Viva Learning ‘Trail’

A Singular Way to Locate Your Learning Resources

March 2021 | Insights From the CEO – The next of the four current trails in the Viva Trail System is Learning.

Where Does the Trail Go?

From the ‘main street’ of Teams, the next trailhead in the Viva ‘trail system’ gets you on the Learnings trail to internal or external Learning content sources and resources. Viva Learning is not another Learning Management System (‘LMS’) but is rather the single way to get to your existing LMS and any other learning resources you have built or invested in for your enterprise. It will allow you to see, in one place, ALL of your learning resources and content. It will allow you to search inside the app, or from anywhere in Teams, for that content regardless of original source as well as allow a particular Team Owner to define a learning curriculum and add that as a tab for a specific Team.

What’s New in the Learning Experience?

In addition to acting as a way to get to all of this knowledge content, Learning also has some amenities built into the Teams app. For compatible content you can actually engage with the learning content right inside the Learning app, without navigating away from Teams. You can search within the app for relevant content and bookmark specific courses to take later, and underpinning everything is a recommendations engine that will surface content that you might be interested in.

Anywhere in Teams, Learning content can be searched for and linked to in a post or reply in order to bring it directly to the attention of teammates. Curricula (a specific sequence of content elements) can be defined and recommended to individuals in specific roles or on specific teams.

When Will It Be Available?

Viva Learning is in private preview (as of mid-March) and is scheduled to be available in public preview at some point in April.

What Will It Cost?

Microsoft has not yet, to our knowledge, published a price for Viva Learning. Whatever fees are currently being paid by your enterprise for an LMS and for any other external paid learning content will be unaffected by Viva Learning. Given that, like Connections, Learning is primarily a hub/aggregator for other paid/free content it’s possible that it will be included in most of the current 365 licenses, but we’ll see in April.
