RealFoundations Salutes Our UK Volunteers
September 2023 | London, England – On a very sunny and warm Thursday 14th September, the RealFoundations’ (RF) UK team volunteered at the Healthy Living & Learning Centre, Age UK Lewisham and Southwark, with the support of volunteering charity, HandsOn London.
“Volunteers make a huge difference when they visit the centre. In addition to the hard work they undertake, their ability to socialise as well as sharing their skills and stories is so well received by our members,” remarked Katrina Jinadu, Manager at The Yalding Day Centre.
Age UK Lewisham and Southwark is a local charity providing essential support to those over 50 in the Lewisham and Southwark area. The Healthy Living & Learning Centre provides opportunities to exercise, socialise and learn new skills for those in and around Bermondsey.
Their ethos is to empower older people to make choices and take control of their lives. The team supports them through this, aiming to improve life for older people, especially those who are vulnerable and frail, and often facing common challenges with care, illness, isolation, and finance.
The staff are passionate about delivering services that empower and support the needs of the most vulnerable and isolated members of the community, from learning how to use smartphones and avoid online scams, to enjoying a hot meal and some company.
The RF UK Team undertook considerable maintenance in the centre’s garden, helped out with lunch and socialised with members who enjoyed meeting new people and seeing the effort and work we had put in. This was a hugely rewarding project, giving our time and energy for the benefit of the local community.
“It was a fantastic day, the team were very hardworking and a lot of fun. We managed to make a very noticeable difference in the back garden, and it was a real joy seeing the volunteers get proper stuck in and proud of their hard graft,” commented Cassandra Wales of HandsOn London.
