Paul Chen Discusses PropTech with Zetta Advisory’s Hazel Mann
July 2019 | Nashville, TN – Lead Managing Consultant, Paul Chen, head of RealFoundations’ Hong Kong office, met with Zetta Advisory’s Hazel Mann during the 2019 Realcomm Conference last month to discuss Asia’s most innovative PropTech trends and how they measure up to what he’s experienced globally.
Paul Chen plays an active role in the PropTech community in Asia, having executed one of the first Hackathons in Hong Kong in 2018 along with Asia PropTech (asiaprop.tech), as well as driving and moderating industry forums with various technology agencies and industry organizations.
When asked how the CRE tech landscape in Asia has changed over the years, Paul Chen says,
“What we’re really seeing in the last year and a half to two years in Asia is all the new technology … A lot of emphasis on IoT (Internet of Things), a lot of emphasis on customer engagement and a lot of emphasis around AI (Artificial Intelligence) now.”
When asked how Asia’s approach to technology differs from what he’s experienced within North America, Paul Chen states,
“The approach to tech in North America seems far more collaborative than that of Asia. Because there’s a high ownership concentration ratio, the landlords and a lot of the building owners will tend to keep new trends very close to the vest. But you know that’s changing more and more. There are participants here from China, Japan, other countries in Asia, and I see that the collaboration is happening … I think from an industry perspective, we in Asia really need to share more ideas.”
