February 2014 — REITs are expanding their strategic sustainability investments in an effort to boost energy savings and maximize returns.
Following our analysis of sustainability data reported in NAREIT’s Leader in the Light survey, with 27 participating U.S. REITs representing all property types, RealFoundations can report that investments in energy efficiency initiatives and projects increased 42 percent from 2011 to 2013. Additionally, participating companies reported a 39 percent increase in annual savings on energy costs as well as 48 percent gains in their return on investment (ROI) for these sustainability projects.
